Casa Lobo Recommends: What to read, watch and listen to during your Catskills Getaway
After a long day of hiking or skiing, it’s best to get comfortable on the couch and watch some television, read a book, or listen to some music. Yet, the endless streaming options often make it hard to decide. If you’re looking for some media that is perfect entertainment during your getaway upstate, consider these recommendations to enjoy with whoever you’re traveling with.
Movies
If you’ve somehow avoided Jordan Peele’s hugely successful Get Out, a weekend up in the Catskills is the perfect setting to experience one of the most interesting horror movies of the 21st century. Set during the protagonists getaway upstate, this movie will provide you with terrifying commentary of the darkest sides of human nature.
Looking for something lighter? The Parent Trap (1998) is timeless, fun for every age group, and the beginning section at summer camp gives you those mountain vibes. Unintended consequences may include singing Nat King Cole’s L-O-V-E for the remainder of your vacation.
TV
We would be remiss not to recommend Severance, which aside from being a fun and thought-provoking show, filmed a few short scenes at the Phoenicia Diner, one of our favorite spots for breakfast. If you want a show that’ll capture your attention with layers of mystery behind toxic corporate culture, and get you hungry for breakfast the next day, this one’s for you.
Yet, if you find yourself looking for some fun for the whole family, Percy Jackson and the Olympians depicts an escape from NYC and a cross-country journey through various rural and city regions. In the show, you’ll find real childlike adventure and vulnerability that lets anyone reconnect with the ones they love most.
Books
The Revenant by Michael Punke, made famous by its movie adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio, follows the story of Hugh Glass alone in the American frontier after tragedy. If you want a character study that will capture your attention and keep you page turning into the early morning, look no further.
But, if you find yourself wanting something with themes of love, friendship and adolescence, My Friends by Fredrik Backman is a great pick to feel enmeshed in a distant world that reminds you of your affinity for the ones closest to you.
Music
Noah Kahan’s Stick Season, based on his return to Maine and personal journey with his hometown, perfectly encapsulates that upstate feeling. Listen to the album while travelling the windy roads to your next daytime spot, and you surely won’t be disappointed.
If you want to continue down a more folky route, the band caamp also makes excellent music that is perfect narration for your weekend getaway.
